DT
Vision: intent, implementation & impact
At Rotherfield School, our intent is to promote the implementation of DT throughout the curriculum. Children are exposed to a wide range of DT from different diversities, cultures, eras and genres. Rotherfield instils a love of design and provides the opportunity for all children to learn first hand by immersing them in different designers, designs, teaching a range of skills needed and to create their own designs and evaluate their work in a meaningful way.
We will implement our vision through:
The teaching of DT includes clear progression throughout the school. The curriculum has been mapped out, to ensure all children have the opportunity to learn a wide range of a DT skills, study a variety of designs and learn to evaluate and develop their own work. Meaningful links to other subjects have been made to enhance the learning opportunities. The curriculum has been designed to ensure that teaching of DT includes work from a range diversities, cultures, eras and genres.
Delivering of lessons follows a process:
Immersing children in the DT skills - Teachers will introduce children to situations where designs are needed to meet a set of criteria ( topic related). They will learn about great designers of the past and be exposed to more recent designers too.
Teaching of the skills – Teachers will teach the skills needed in order to enable children to create their own work.
Evaluation – children will evaluate their DT and the DT of others.
Opportunities to experience DT are provided in after school clubs and the school will promote DT work within the local community.
Impact:
The impact of the vision will be:
- Children will have an understanding of DT and understand its importance throughout time and around the world in industry.
- DT will become embedded in the curriculum and this will be shown in every class through evidence in books and displays around the school. Skills taught will be evident.
- Children will gain new skills and build on these as they progress through the school, developing a confidence in design technology.
Long Term Planning

Year 1 have been making healthy fruit smoothies. We started by tasting and describing different fruits to decide what flavours we’d like in our own smoothie. Some fruits went down better than others! We then designed our own smoothies before preparing the fruit by chopping and washing it and then used a blender to whizz it up. We ended with a fruit smoothie tasting session and they were delicious!
