Music

Vision: intent, implementation & impact

At Rotherfield School, our intent is to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, so that they can develop the skills to appreciate, appraise and participate in a wide variety of musical genres.

We will implement our vision through teaching music discretely, following the Charanga scheme of work, listening to and discussing high quality and diverse music and by singing in community events.

There are four main objectives of teaching music in our school, which are to enable children:

To perform: through singing and using their voices, and by having the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

To compose: by creating music on their own and with others, using instruments and technology appropriately.

To transcribe: through knowing and understanding how music is created, produced, communicated and then organised into musical structures, including pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure.

To describe: by listening to, reviewing and evaluating music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians.

Impact:

The impact of the vision will be:

  •    Confidence to perform in front of an audience at school concerts and performances.
  •    Independence and teamwork to create music to share with parents and other classes.
  •    Ability to record musical ideas.
  •    Curiosity and appreciation of music ranging over time and cultures that enhances school focus on diversity.
